Our Story

Started by Hans & April Hess, BreadSong is where our passion for sourdough meets flavor. Located in Carmel, at the gateway to Big Sur, BreadSong is the top destination for artisanal sandwiches. When we say handcrafted we mean we make the sourdough bread and rolls, roast and slice the Wagyu beef and prepare everything from raw ingredients on site.

This approach has made us a favorite deli for locals and visitors who want to enjoy our steakhouse dining room or take food to go on backpacking trips and picnic lunches in Big Sur and on the beautiful beaches of Carmel. We also start the day out right with coffee we roast ourselves in small batches, a fantastic breakfast sandwich, avocado toast, doughnuts fried in duck fat and fresh pastries.

At night, we turn into SteakCraft, (www.steakcraft.com), a full-service experience that offers a menu of the best steak in Carmel – domestic and Japanese Wagyu.

Went here to try out the coffee and wow I am blown away. I am very picky with my iced mochas and this met my expectations and gave me a smile. I order an iced mocha with oatmilk and it was beautifully crafted rich and sweet. With enough caffeine but not too much. I also ordered there duck fried donuts and omg soooo good so definitely 💯 recommend just to go there and try. They have sandwiches if you’re not feeling a coffee and pastry or you can visit later and try the dinner.

Excellent warm pastrami with cheese on Sourdough, service was very good. Tasty, filling, a bit pricey unless you split the order.

Best turkey sandwich I’ve ever had? Quite possibly. The fries and aioli flight too were remarkable. Price is wildly steep but I guess that’s California vacation towns for you. Still, the quality of these items, unlike many instances, may warrant it. If you’re a sandwich aficionado, look no further: this is a must visit.

Awesome sandwiches including a Wagyu beef sandwich! Next time will try the duck fat fried donuts and maybe buy some of the fresh eggs for sale. There are wines by the glass for those who can drink with lunch and not fall asleep, lol!

Amazing!! The food here was so good! You HAVE to get the Thin Cut Duck Fat French Fries! I took one bite and knew I needed to order more which I promptly did! My husband had the Pastrami and Cheese on Sourdough and loved it! The bread is home made and it was a huge serving! Great little gem!

I come here often for dinner (Steakcraft Wed-Sat) and lunch (Monday – Saturday). I have had all the sandwiches but my go-to is the classic Turkey sandwich on toasted sourdough. Sometime I add avocado but it’s great without it as well. And those duck fat fries are delicious as well with the classic flight of aiolis. I’m going again today and will be getting another one of my favorites: the classic sliced beef sandwich on sourdough. Try all the sandwiches on different breads (doughnut, featherlight roll or sliced sourdough).
